Airlines used to turn a blind eye to luggage being over the limit. Not any more, unless it is by a tiny amount.

I have wanted one of these scales ever since an airline told me my case was over the limit on the outward leg by 2 kg yet I had weighed it before I left home and it had been underweight. Mysteriously, even though I binned or used some items while abroad and bought nothing new, the weight increased at check-in on the return leg. I took my bag to scales at empty check-ins and got different readings, which proved that at least some of them were inaccurate.

I Googled this issue and discovered that a newspaper investigation into airport scales found that they can indeed be inaccurate. They are almost bound to be – even if calibrated at the start of the day, they will tend to lose accuracy as the day progresses.

These scales are good. Three things stand out:
    1. They are ergonomic – the handle fits comfortably in your hand. This is important if weighing a 20kg suitcase.
    2. The handle is a long nylon loop. Some travel scales simply have a metal hook – if the handle is too thick for the hook then you can’t use the scales – a massive flaw. This nylon loop will fit any shape. It’s so much better.
    3. It locks the reading in so you can weigh it, put the case down and then look at the reading – valuable with a heavy case (see below).

Photo 1 shows what it looks like, with the nylon loop undone. Note the metal shape on the bottom, which when folded over will hook onto the triangle on the top. The bank note is to give you an idea of its size.

Photo 2 shows the nylon loop folded over.

Photo 3 shows its ergonomic shape – it sits comfortably in your hand.

When you weigh something, once the weight stabilises (i.e. the numbers stop changing) then the weight is locked in and ‘Hold’ is displayed on the screen (photo 4). The weight is locked for approximately 12 seconds – so you can put a heavy case down before looking at the reading.

If you want to cancel the ‘hold’ before then, one click on the on/off button does that without switching it off.

It weighs in grams, ounces, kilogrammes and pounds (decimal – not pounds & ounces) – see photos 4-7. To toggle between them, just hold the on/off button down for about one second. If instead you click the on/off button for a fraction of a second, it deletes the reading, ready for the next one.

I will be taking this to airports with me, just in case. If an airline says my bags are overweight and these scales say they are not, I would rate the chance of an airline changing its mind as close to zero percent! They will just claim that my scales are inaccurate and theirs are accurate. Nevertheless, you may get them to ignore a minor excess when you might not have otherwise.

The only disadvantage that I can think of is that it doesn’t have a backlight but you do not need one.

A battery is included. It works straight out of the box. The maximum weight is 50kg though I imagine that most people will use these to check the weight of their hand luggage and hold luggage. If overweight, I suggest that you put heavy items in your pockets (so long as they are allowed in the cabin) . One tip is to remove e.g. a jumper from your luggage and wear it.

I received this luggage scale for free in return for a review. The following is my honest opinion on this product:

These scales are great, simple and easy to use. The scale comes in its box along with instructions. The instructions don’t have any diagrams, but are very easy to understand and come in both English and Chinese. The instructions state how to insert a battery, but you don’t have to worry about this as the scale already has one CR2032 battery pre-installed!

Using this scale is very easy you simply hook the strap around your bag/suitcase handle and then attach the hook back to the triangle hoop. Then you turn the scale on. It’s important that you don’t pull on the suitcase at all yet or you will get an inaccurate reading. The scale only has one button to press. Short press this button to turn the scale on. Short press it again to turn it off.
Now, you can change the measurement you want to use. For example the scale starts by measuring kg, but if you want to change it you have to press and hold the button until you see it change to lbs. Then you have to press and hold it again to change to the other units until you get back to kg. The units available for weighing are: kg, lb, g and oz. Once you turn off the scale it will always come on using the same unit unless you change it again.

So, weighing you bag is very simple. Just turn on the scale to your preferred unit or measurement and then gently lift up your bag while keeping the scale horizontal in your hands. You only need to life the bag up a little off the ground and you get to see how heavy it is.

I’d recommend this scale to anyone. The measurement seems to be accurate according to what I weigh and is nice and comfortable to hold in both hands. I also like the added feature of being able to weigh in 4 different measurement units :). A great set of luggage scales for anyone interested in buying some.

Sturdy And Easy To Use, 30 Oct. 2015

In these days of greedy airlines, ready and waiting to take large amounts of money from unsuspecting passengers who have the temerity to arrive with luggage a few kilos heavy (take a bow, Ryanair) I would have thought that a decent set of luggage scales was an essential for anyone contemplating airline travel.

Certainly you can get very cheap spring operated scales – even Poundland have a version. However, in practice these are next to useless as they normally only go up to 22kg or even as little as 20kg, and are notoriously inaccurate. Our electronic scales broke recently and I was reduced to using one of these sets – the 20kg I had measured at home proved to be 21.5 kg as weighed by Easyjet which was about half a kilo short of an expensive disaster!

These JetSet scales are very impressive in a number of respects. It is very easy to hook the strap around the handle of your suitcase with no chance of doing damage, as there is with scales which have a hook attachment. The shape is ergonomically very efficient so that they are simple to grasp in one hand and weigh your luggage. They weigh up to 50kg and are very accurate – important as not every a airline has a 20kg or 23kg limit. I was on one which allowed 30kg recently. Finally they do look very stylish.

Overall I was very impressed with these scales which were sent to me to test and review. They seem very sturdy and should last a very long while under normal use and are priced very competitively. Highly recommended!
