Overnight roller case., 30 Oct. 2010

A number of colleagues had previously bought the smaller Kensington Roller Case, and these battle worn examples bore testament to their durability in the face of robust handling. I chose the overnight case for the extra storage, given that I ‘hot-desk’ and have no storage space at work. The handle feels sturdy, even at full load and it rolls well. The fabric and zips are good and strong and the stitching is well executed. I believe that the product represents value for money.

I bought this one as it seemed to be the only way to carry about the vast Dell laptop I was using at the time.

It should be a good bag, but it’s let down by poor quality in certain areas.

    1. The structural fabric around the top handle has torn apart, unable to cope with the loads I carry I suppose, but the fact is that there is no webbing going down from the handle to transfer the strain down to the base or other parts of the shell. This means the handle just pulls the top of the bag to bits.
    2. The front of the bag loses its shape quite quickly, which means its actually difficult to use all these different pockets, the front just turns into a mess of zips and material and you can’t find anything.
    3. The wheels are small and there is no clearance at the bottom of the trolley, some rubbing strip at the bottom frays and falls off within a week (see other reviews). If you only go through posh airports with smooth floors, you’ll be fine, but I go to some very underdeveloped places and need to hump it down rocky pavements. The bag does not fare well!

I tried to talk to Kensington about the issue of the handle coming away, as that was not good and they need to know their design needs a simple modification. I got bounced around by email and telephone between people who all saw it as someone elses problem, until eventually I got bored and decided Kensington weren’t going to listen to feedback and improve the product.

I paid a lot for the thing, but it’s only slightly better than a £20 thing I bought on the high street last week. So I’m knocking an extra star off for charging a premium price for a product that isn’t.

    Barely fits 17″ Vaio, 28 Feb. 2008

I chose this bag based on various reviews on other sites which rated it very highly for space, storage and weight distribution and also dimensions which suggested it would fit my laptop comfortably.

The storage and weight distribution are good, plenty of pockets for stationery and enough room for a couple of A4 binder files (not a lever arch one), however I recommend that you measure your laptop very carefully.

Mine is a Sony Vaio AR51M, measuring just 16.5″ across, by 13.5″ deep. It is a VERY tight fit. The zipper barely clears the corners of the laptop and the separate inner protective sleeve it advertises isn’t anywhere near suitable for a 17″ laptop. In order to get any protection you have to remove all of the velcro inner padding from the sleeve (which I don’t think would fit a 15.4″ laptop) and even then you can’t close the zip, so I’d forget all about the pull-out aspect of the inner sleeve all together if you have a 17″ machine.

If your laptop is one of the heavier ones around like mine, and you only need to transport it occasionally, then this bag should be fine provided you’re not bothered about the inner sleeve, but for those of you who travel around with your laptop regularly, I’d look for something else.

I’d say if your laptop is any larger than 16.0″ wide by 13.0″ deep, look elsewhere. BUT – If you’re keen on using the inner sleeve properly, then don’t even think about this bag if your machine is more than 12″ deep. It simply won’t close.

    Measure carefully.
